Andrew Lloyd Webber: Olympics will hit theaters (AP)

LONDON ? Andrew Lloyd Webber says London's Olympic Games will force most of the capital's theaters to close for the summer.

Lloyd Webber said Friday the games will make it "very tough" for shows in London's West End and predicted that three major musicals would not play over the games.

The composer told BBC radio that the biggest hits ? such as his own "The Phantom of the Opera" ? would play over the games but that others would struggle to draw crowds.

He says advance bookings for West End shows were running at only 10 percent of their normal level.

Lloyd Weber's Really Useful Group owns seven London theaters. Others in the industry have predicted a slump in demand over the summer.

Eastern Libya poll indicates political Islam will closely follow democracy

If Libya manages to forge a political system where majority views are taken into account it's clear that political Islam is set to play a major political role.

A new poll of eastern Libyan public opinion released last week indicates that political Islam is set to play a major role in the country's future if institutions emerge that take into accout the will of the general public.

The poll sponsored by the International Republican Institute (a US-government funded non-profit) found a high degree of optimism about the future, concerns about the security situation in the country, and?conservative (and somewhat contradictory)?attitudes when it comes to?faith and politics.

In Eastern Libya, 83 percent said freedom of the press was "important," and 71 percent said it was important to have laws giving equal rights to "religious and tribal groups," which would seem to indicate concern for protecting minority rights. But 94 percent agreed with the proposition that "people should be prohibited from offending" religions and 85 percent agreed that "religion should be part of government" (68 percent of those "strongly agreed.") Asked about whether a "secular" state was a good idea, 69 percent of Libyans dissaproved against 14 percent that approved.

None of this means that a Saudi Arabian style regime is in the offing. Many Arab's take the word "secular" to mean something like "Godless," so the notion of secularism is offensive. But there's a long continuum from there to religious rule.?But over time, it would be natural for groups like the Libyan version of the Muslim Brotherhood, which has emerged as the dominant power in Egypt's ongoing parliamentary elections, to develop a major voice in politics (Qaddafi suppressed?Islamist political activism as ruthlessly as he did all other challenges to his rule). ?

The poll was carried?out in mid-October,?as Muammar Qaddafi's hometown and last bastion, Sirte, was falling to the rebellion, which?probably?pushed results in a positive direction. Not only did optimism surge at the time of Qaddafi's death, which effectively ended the civil war, but eastern Libya was less touched by the ravages of war than Western towns like Tripoli, Sirte, and Misrata.

But the numbers are still striking. In Eastern Libya, 84?percent of respondents said they were positive about the?future and that the National Transitional Council (NTC), the unelected group that's promised to guide Libya to democracy, were doing a good job. Meeting these high expectations may be a challenge though.??

Asked what government priorities should be, 97 percent said it was "very important" for the? government to provide food and housing for?the poor and 72 percent said it was "very important" for the government to "play a central role in the economy and business sector."?The context for?that second answer is that Libya's oil wealth has made the government the country's largest employer, by far. Though they may have hated Qaddafi, Libyans agreed with him that it's the state's responsibilty to deliver jobs and economic growth,. You can expect whatever government emerges to play a dominate role in the economy, at least in the medium term.

Revealed: Nazi spy was UK's first double-agent

A British engineer regarded for decades as a Nazi spy was really Britain's first double-agent who helped the Allies defeat Germany, according to a recently released book.

The authors of "Snow: The Double Life of a World War II Spy," also reveal that spy Arthur Owens is the father of Hollywood actress Patricia Owens, who starred in "The Fly" in 1958 and "Sayonara" with Marlon Brando in 1957.

Arthur Owens was a Welsh nationalist, according to the book by espionage writer Nigel West (pen name of Rupert Allason) and Welsh author and film producer Madoc Roberts, The Telegraph of London reported.

The Germans recruited Arthur Owens, a failed inventor who needed money, to spy when he was on a 1935 business trip to Belgium.

Under the code name Johnny O'Brien, Owens gave the Nazis vital information about Britain's military buildup ahead of World War II.

Later, the book claims, he agreed to become a double agent for MI5, the British spy agency.

Re-dubbed Snow, Owens paved the way for a string of successful double agents and helped deliver scores of German spies to the British, the book says.

The book, which has a Facebook page, describes Owens' cover as so deep that neither side was ever wholly confident of his loyalties, the Telegraph said. In 1941, Owens' MI5 handlers ordered him interred in Dartmoor prison, where he gained the confidence of German inmates and fed information back to his spymasters.

"Arthur Owens was the foundation of the double-cross system which proved so vital in helping the Allies in so many areas," West told the Telegraph. "His contribution has never fully been appreciated, but it is hard to overstate how important his role was."

Roberts called Owens' character complex.

"His contribution to the war effort is undeniable, but what is less certain is what his motivations were," Roberts told the Telegraph. "Ultimately he was probably out for himself. But even if his intentions were not entirely honorable, without him the entire course of the war may have been different."

As for his daughter, Patricia Owens never fully acknowledged who her father was, the Telegraph said, because she feared backlash from people who considered her father a traitor.

Owens' contributions were officially revealed when documents were declassified in the 1970s, the Telegraph said, but few people took notice.

After the war, Arthur Owens lived in anonymity in Canada and later Ireland, the Telegraph said.

Scientists scan damaged audio discs, resurrect fresh beats

Digitizing your analog archives? Vinyl to CD / MP3 / iPod turntables might do well enough for your old 45s, but the folks at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory prefer to listen to their old beats by taking pictures of them. More specifically, restoration specialists are using a system called IRENE/3D to snap high resolution images of damaged media. The cracked discs -- often made of wax on brass or composition board -- are then repaired digitally, letting researchers play the digitized discs with an emulated stylus. So far, the team has recovered a handful of 125 year old recordings from a team in Alexander Graham Bell's Volta laboratory. The all digital system gives researchers a hands-off way to recover audio from relic recordings without running the risk of damaging them in the process -- and no, they probably won't let you use it to listen to that beat up copy of the White Album you've had in your closet since eighth grade. Hit the source link to hear what they've recovered.

Russian team trying to top K2 ? in winter (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Reaching the summit of K2 in summer is one of mountaineering's most deadly and difficult challenges.

Now, a team of Russians is attempting what no other has yet achieved ? scaling the world's second highest peak in winter.

The 15 climbers will endure temperatures plunging more than 50 below zero and winds of up to 70 kilometers an hour (40 miles per hour) as they inch up the stunning giant pyramid that straddles Pakistan and China. The assault is expected to take 2 1/2 months.

"This is only possible for a Russian team," said Victor Kozlov, the affable leader of the expedition, whose members put up a new route on K2 in 2007. "God willing, we can make it," he said this week in the Pakistani capital, ahead of his journey to the Karakoram range in the far north of the country.

Winter ascents of the world's 14 highest mountains are some of most prized achievements left in climbing.

The "eight-thousanders," as they're known since they all top 8,000 meters (5 miles), were all conquered in summertime long ago. Amid a crowded field where each year hundreds pay around $80,000 to be guided up Everest, winter ascents can help a climber stand out and get his or her name in the history books.

Winter climbers have been summitting the 14 one by one the past decades ? starting with Everest ? but peaks of the Karakorum remained unconquered. The range is further north than the Himalayas, where Everest is located, and thus sees harsher winters. K2 is the northernmost peak of the lot.

Teams attempted winter ascents in the Karakorum 16 times in recent years. The first success came this year, when a three-member team including American Cory Richards summitted Gasherbrum II. That left only four peaks, three of them in the Karakorum and one nearby in the Himalayas.

"If they make it up K2 in winter, it will be huge," said Billi Bierling, a mountaineering journalist with three "eight thousanders" to her name, including Everest.

Elite mountaineers thrive on first ascents, new routes on established peaks and climbing in the "purest style" possible. That typically means no porter assistance high up on the slopes, no oxygen bottles or no reliance on fixed ropes left by other parties.

The Russians, who start their ascent around Christmas, are not using oxygen and will have porters at base camp only. Their gear and food ? including three freshly slaughtered yaks and, according to Kozlov, a little vodka ? is being flown in by Pakistani army helicopters charging more than $7,000 an hour.

Winter climbing means less daylight and temperatures around twice as cold as summer, making frostbite more of a danger. Living conditions at base camp are more miserable, winds are more vicious, there is more snow, greater avalanche risk and climbers need more food and equipment to stay alive.

The one plus: "The mountains are less crowded," said Bierling.

By the mid 1960s, all of the world's tallest 14 mountains had seen summer ascents.

A Polish team was first up an "eight-thousander" in winter, topping out on Everest in February 1980. The triumph set the stage for a decade of other successful expeditions, mostly by a group of Polish climbers nicknamed "The Ice Warriors."

The Russians intend to follow the "Cesen" route up K2 before venturing to the 8,611-meter summit from a face that has never been climbed, hoping it will allow them to avoid the worst of the wind. They plan to fix ropes and establish camps up the mountain. They will then wait for a window of clear weather, at most a few days sometime in February or early March, and make a summit dash.

K2 is renowned for terrible, unpredictable weather and steeper slopes than Everest. In the summer of 2008, 11 climbers died in an avalanche, the deadliest incident on a peak that has the second-highest fatality rate among the "eight-thousanders." More than 300 have reached the top, but at least 80 have died trying.

Andrzej Zawada, the Polish climber who made Everest's first winter ascent, tried K2 in 1987.

In a written account, he said that from the end of December there was so much snow at base camp they had to dig tunnels to get into their tents. In 80 days on the mountain, they had just 10 days of good weather. They retreated after reaching a high point of 7,300 meters, frostbitten, their tents and ropes ripped off the mountain in the wind.

"We did everything that was humanly possible in those inhospitable conditions," he wrote. "We were simply powerless in the face of such dangerous, formidable and life threatening elements which people have to confront in the highest mountains."

Ashraf Aman, the first Pakistani climber to summit K2, said he thought the Russians stood a chance.

"They are a strong team, and experienced, but it depends on the weather," he said.

He urged them to be fearless: "If you face death in the face, it will run away like a dog."

There are two other expeditions elsewhere in the Karakorams this winter.

Pakistan has long welcomed foreign mountaineering expeditions, which bring cash and jobs into one of the country's poorest regions. While the northern areas where the Karakorum range is situated are some of the safest in Pakistan, largely untouched by militancy, the spike in Islamist terrorism in the country over the last five years has led to a sharp drop in arrivals, said Naiknam Karim, from Adventure Tours Pakistan, which is organizing the Russian push.

"The biggest hurdle is the law and order situation and the perception outside the country," he said. "Sometimes the climbers want to come, but their families don't allow it."

Orang-utans self-cannibalise to survive

LIFE on the edge of starvation means some orang-utans are digesting their own muscles. Halting the logging that is destroying their habitat could rescue them from the brink.

Bornean orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus) live in tropical rainforests, where the supply of fruit is erratic. To survive, the orang-utans eat poorly digestible leaves and bark in fallow years.

Erin Vogel of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, monitored wild orang-utans for five years. She found that when orangs had gone without fruit for several months, their urine contained nitrogen compounds indicating the apes had begun to digest their muscles for protein.

Because there is so little pristine forest left for the endangered apes, Vogel says it is also important to protect partially logged forests, and even create new ones. "By planting more trees that the orang-utans regularly consume in logged forests, you could potentially make the species less vulnerable," she says.

Saving money: Little changes make a huge difference

Frugality works best when the money you save outweighs the value of whatever you decide to eliminate from your budget

A few months ago, I wrote a post called ?Two Paths to Financial Success.? In it, I outlined how there are two distinct ways to succeed financially.

Skip to next paragraph Trent Hamm

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Recent posts

One, which I called ?success in the margins,? refers to things like frugality, cutting costs, saving diligently, and so forth. The other, which I called ?success in the mainstream,? referred to things like entrepreneurship and career building.

Success in the margins, I pointed out, is a sure way to success, but there is something of a cap to that success. You?re limited in how much you can save by your income and your fundamental living expenses. On the other hand, success in the mainstream doesn?t have a cap, but it is far from a guarantee. Entrepreneurship and career pursuit are risky enterprises that often don?t turn out.

Anyway, a reader recently took me to task for referring to frugality and saving as ?success in the margins.? In his words, ?There is nothing marginal whatsoever about the money you can save by living sensibly and putting some money into investments. It?s practical, anyone can do it, and the positive results can be repeated over and over again. That?s far from marginal.?

I agree completely with his statement. The reason I named it such was not because it is a marginal method, but because it is inherently capped by your income and lifestyle. Frugality, by its very nature, is about shaving away a little bit from the edges and saving what you?ve trimmed. That money comes about from the margins of your life.

For example, one of the first moves I made when I started my financial recovery is to reboot my work commute. Before the change, I would drive by a coffee shop on my way to work and many days I would be tempted to stop in there, have a cup of coffee, and often follow it with a bagel. On my way home, I would drive by an electronics store and a bookstore, and I would visit both of them a few times a week. Naturally, each week, I found myself spending a lot of unnecessary money.

When I changed my commute, I no longer went by the coffee shop, the electronics store, or the bookstore. I decided that it was just fine if I happened to go to them, but with my new route, I had to make the willful choice to go there. The big sign wasn?t hanging out there along my route tempting me.

So, every once in a while, I?d decide to splurge and go to one of the places, but most of the time, I barely even thought about them on my way home from work.

Those coffee shop and bookstore visits were in the margins of my life. They were things that I did, but they weren?t deeply important to me or to who I was. They just filled up some of my time and attention. I barely noticed when I cut them away.

That, to me, is ?success in the margins.?

Frugality does not work if it?s removing something you value more than the money you?re saving. If you?re making yourself miserable to save a few dollars, it?s not worth it.

Quite often, when people think about frugality, they don?t think about the margins. Instead, they think about the things they value deeply. They don?t want to lose that valuable thing, so they just toss aside the idea of cutting back.

Frugality works well in the margins. It works when you?re trying a different kind of dishwashing soap. It works when you cut out a routine shopping trip that?s become boring. It works when you give up on and get rid of the pieces of a hobby that you?re no longer passionate about. It works when you make a bunch of meals ahead of time, buying the ingredients in bulk, so you can store the made-ahead meals in the freezer and always have something convenient to make for supper.

So often, these kinds of changes are really easy to make. You pretty much forget about the change once you?ve started doing it, and the only impact it has is the savings that appear in your checking account.

Success in the margins does not mean marginal success. It means finding success in the areas of your life that don?t deeply matter to you.

BlackBerry PlayBook gets root thanks to childishly named DingleBerry tool

DingleBerry
It's been a long time coming, but the PlayBook has finally been rooted. Devs neuralic, xpvqs and Chris Wade have been hard at work and have finally discovered a persistently exploitable hole that enables unfettered root access to the PlayBook. The culmination of their efforts, DingleBerry, hasn't been released just yet, but it should be hitting the series of tubes in the not too distant future. Obviously having super user access opens a world of posibilities to developers, but there are some immediate advantages too. For one, with DingleBerry the creators were able to re-enable web access to Hulu -- not only bypassing the lack of an app, but skipping the usual requirement of a Plus account for mobile consumption. Head on after the break to see the hack in action.
