Fiscal Cliff Deal Reached, Clean Energy Not Forgotten ? News Watch

After months of?negotiating, lawmakers in Washington, D.C., reached an?agreement?to?avoid?the so-called ?fiscal cliff.? Featured in the?measure?is an?extension?of a renewable electricity production tax credit for wind,?geothermal?and some?biomass projects, which gives credit for each kilowatt-hour of energy they produce.

Highly?contested?prior to the bill?s passing was the credit?s?impact?on the?wind industry. The credit, which offers 2.2 cents per kilowatt-hour of wind power production, had already expired when the deal was reached Tuesday. Its?pending expiration?had resulted in?layoffs?at United States turbine parts manufacturing plants as developers placed new projects on hold, though wind-turbine installations?are predicted to exceed natural gas fueled power plants?in the U.S. this year.

The tax credit has been expanded to cover wind projects that?begin construction in 2013?not only projects that are up and running. Lawmakers also extended credits for residential energy efficiency improvements,?plug-in vehicles, energy-efficient new home construction and the production of various?biofuels?including one that treats?algae as a qualified feedstock.

Then, there are a few smaller items some might have missed in the new law. Among them: a $2-per-ton?subsidy for coal?produced on Native American lands and a credit for?electric scooters. Also,?electric and natural gas industries?kept dividend tax rates on par with capital gains taxes.

Climate Records, Missteps

Even as many cities?tied or broke?weather records in 2012, climate-related coverage in the press waned, according to independent data collected by the?nonprofit? The Daily Climate. In fact, it dropped 2.4 percent from 2011. Among the surprises: stories linking climate change to weird weather and sea-level rise were up.

On Jan. 1 California looked to its own climate record when it?began enforcing?its cap-and-trade program, AB32?the first of its kind in the nation. If the program is deemed?successful?cutting pollution without harming the economy,?The National Journal?reports, ?there is every reason to think that it will pave the way for more state and national action on climate change.??The?Washington Post?worries about a number of things that could go wrong with the program. Among them is the issue of ?leakage??decreased emissions within California but increased emissions in other states.

The announcement of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson?s?departure?is expected to refocus attention on the Obama Administration?s?direction?on issues such as climate change and energy strategy. Among one of the most immediate: legal challenges as regulators prepare to release final rules?limiting carbon dioxide emissions?from power plants under the Clean Air Act. The agency may also face legal challenges from environmental groups who want it to?propose air pollution standards for oil and gas drilling. EPA Deputy Administrator Robert Perciasepe is expected to fill Jackson?s shoes,?at least temporarily. Steven Cohen argues in?The?Huffington Post?that the EPA, under any leadership, must make ?the leap from environmental protection to environmental and economic sustainability.?

Energy Boom, Arctic Drilling Perils

Even amidst a drilling boom,?ThinkProgress?reports Americans paid more for gasoline in 2012?on average roughly nine cents more than in 2011. Tensions with Iran and?refinery constraints?were cited as factors in the increase. In 2013, AAA predicts prices?to remain high?just not as high as in 2012.

Meanwhile, an oil rig that?ran aground?off the coast of Alaska has renewed?debate?about Shell?s plans to drill in the Arctic?this summer. This accident is the latest in a?string?of?issues?Shell has?faced?in its efforts to drill in the region. While the vessel was carrying more than 100,000 gallons of petroleum products, there has been?no indication?of a leak. As work to remove the rig continues, the web is?abuzz?with?speculations?about what this could mean for the?future of Arctic drilling.

The Climate Post?offers a rundown of the week in climate and energy news. It is produced each Thursday?by?Duke University?s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions.

Many weddings as gay marriage becomes legal in Md.

TILGHMAN ISLAND, Md. (AP) ? Same-sex couples in Maryland were greeted with cheers and noisemakers held over from New Year's Eve parties, as gay marriage became legal in the first state south of the Mason-Dixon Line on New Year's Day.

James Scales, 68, was married to William Tasker, 60, on Tuesday shortly after midnight by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake inside City Hall.

"It's just so hard to believe it's happening," Scales said shortly before marrying his partner of 35 years.

Six other same-sex couples also were being married at City Hall. Ceremonies were taking place in other parts of the state as well.

The ceremonies follow a legislative fight that pitted Gov. Martin O'Malley against leaders of his Catholic faith. Voters in the state, founded by Catholics in the 17th century, sealed the change by approving a November ballot question.

"There is no human institution more sacred than that of the one that you are about to form," Rawlings-Blake said during the brief ceremony. "True marriage, true marriage, is the dearest of all earthly relationships."

Brigitte Ronnett, who also was married, said she hopes one day to see full federal recognition of same-sex marriage. Maryland, Maine and Washington state were the first states to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote, in November, a development Ronnett said was significant.

"I think it's a great sign when you see that popular opinion is now in favor of this," said Ronnett, 51, who married Lisa Walther, 51, at City Hall.

Same-sex couples in Maryland have been able to get marriage licenses since Dec. 6, but they did not take effect until Tuesday.

In 2011, same-sex marriage legislation passed in the state Senate but stalled in the House of Delegates. O'Malley hadn't made the issue a key part of his 2011 legislative agenda, but indicated that summer that he was considering backing a measure similar to New York's law, which includes exemptions for religious organizations.

Shortly after, Archbishop Edwin O'Brien of Baltimore wrote to O'Malley that same-sex marriage went against the governor's faith.

"As advocates for the truths we are compelled to uphold, we speak with equal intensity and urgency in opposition to your promoting a goal that so deeply conflicts with your faith, not to mention the best interests of our society," wrote O'Brien, who served as archbishop of the nation's first diocese from October 2007 to August 2011.

The governor was not persuaded. He held a news conference in July 2011 to announce that he would make same-sex marriage a priority in the 2012 legislative session. He wrote back to the archbishop that "when shortcomings in our laws bring about a result that is unjust, I have a public obligation to try to change that injustice."

The measure, with exemptions for religious organizations that choose not to marry gay couples, passed the House of Delegates in February in a close vote. O'Malley signed it in March. Opponents then gathered enough signatures to put the bill to a statewide vote, and it passed with 52 percent in favor.

In total, nine states and the District of Columbia have approved same-sex marriage. The other states are Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and Washington.

Meanwhile, the weddings continued throughout the day Tuesday. Clayton Zook, 28, and Wayne McKenzie, 30, married by the waters of the Chesapeake Bay at the Black Walnut Point Inn on Tilghman Island.

"We've been together for six and a half years, so this one day doesn't really change a whole lot as far as our feelings," said Zook, of Baltimore. "It does change a whole lot in how we are recognized, and we're certainly felt more as equal in the state of Maryland now."

Tory Burch nasty legal battle with ex-husband comes to an end | The ...

#womenatthewatercooler

For the past few months, fashion mogul Tory Burch and her ex-husband Chris have been in a nasty legal battle over his not being able to sell his stake in her company, Tory Burch LLC, and possible plagiarism of her designs from his new company C. Wonder. But now according to Women?s Wear Daily, Tory and Chris have agreed to settle. The ?drunken WASP nest? (as the judge referred to it!) drama may now be over.

While it was very sad to watch this once-happy couple who launched a successful business together descend into this kind of animosity, especially when you think of their six children (three daughters from his first marriage, three sons they had together), as time went by their life seemed more and more like an episode of Revenge. First there were the insults: he accused her of being a socialite who didn?t know anything about business and couldn?t have succeeded without him. And then there were claims that a Russian billionaire was acting as a double agent and helping Chris steal secrets from Tory. My goodness, it?s like Homeland with more fabric swatches.

Chris Burch will still retain a stake in Tory Burch LLC, while two minority investors have also come on board. Calling the deal a ?milestone transaction,? Mr Burch said he was ?confident? in the New York-based brand?s ?continued success? as he stays on as a ?significant investor.?

Clearly Tory wanted this very messy, public dispute to be over as soon as possible. She said in an interview with CNN in November:

?At the end of the day, my priority is with my business and my children. I have six children with Chris that he and I care about and that?s what I think about. But also [there is] my team that I look at and I think it is extraordinary what we have built together. My focus is finding a solution and hopefully we will get there and then we will be better for it at the end.?

It?s a great way for her to start a new year, which may also include an IPO (especially with the addition of more prominent investors).

Self Improvement And Empowerment Blog: Even You Need to be ...

Is it possible to Mother yourself when Mom's not available or nearby? I say yes. I think the best thing your mother can do for you is to teach you how to mother and nurture yourself. But let's face it - it's a skill, a talent and a gift. Doing this kind of self care requires commitment like that of a mother. But as an adult it is the #1 thing you need to become adept at.

This Mother's Day while showering or being showered by attention think of how you can become more self reliant in the self nurturing arena.

Secrets to Get YOU Started on Your Nurturing Journey:

Secret #1 -Reflect: Do you have time to reflect and think things through or are you always harried, frazzled and stressed? Well if you spend most of your days in this anxiety prone state you will not be on the road to long term health.

Learning to slow down and say no to all the distractions which take you away from your true self - your true core - will re-generate and honor your beautiful nature and soul.

Sounds like foreign territory? You must learn to nurture yourself by creating time without pressure (one of my new mottos) and taking the time to give to yourself - even just a little.

Secret #2 - Journal: I love to write I find it a source of grounding, clarity and a place where my imagination can run free. I get to work things out on paper. It's a safe and uncrowded place for me to explore and be as honest as I possibly can with myself. I know you may not find this easy to do and may in fact run from the mere mention of sitting down to write out your deep and most private thoughts. You scream out "I have no time, someone might read it, and I'm not much of a writer." Start with small steps. Remember this is a place to get to know yourself better. To get you started you may want to pick up the classic "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron.

Secret #3 Allow Others to do for YOU: Alert, alert! You can not do it all by yourself! I mean you can but at what price? Do you want to constantly feel rundown while feeling virtuous about accomplishing a feat you had set out to do single handedly? Wouldn't you like to have a team helping you out all the way to the finish line? Did you know collaboration comes very naturally to women and is so much more rewarding. Women actually crave it. Better satisfy this craving that your sweet tooth. Your "team or helpers" will also feel special contributing. They will feel a part of something and have a real sense of belonging. Let them! Let go of any martyr or a saint tendencies. Come to terms with the fact that you are a mere mortal with needs and an ability to ask for help (always!).

Secret #4 Make yourself Important: But don't take yourself too seriously. Don't dismiss any thoughts or ideas you have. Value them all - they are a part of you. The worst thing you can do is attack, criticize or demean yourself in any way. You want to be supportive of yourself at all times just like a nurturing mother would be.

Secret #5 Take a Bath: Nothing like a warm, sudsy, comforting, candle-lit bath at the end of a day that says "I love me"! No I don't mean in a narcissistic way but in a loving, mothering, and accepting way.

The warmth of this simple yet soothing activity will go a long way. You will feel calmer, more relaxed and you will sleep better, too. Your calming brain chemicals, specifically Serotonin and Gaba, will be activated ensuring a deep and restful sleep.

Nutrient-sensing enzymes key to starvation response and survival in newborn mammals

Nutrient-sensing enzymes key to starvation response and survival in newborn mammals

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

In the perilous hours immediately after birth, a newborn mammal must survive the sudden loss of food supply from its mother. Under normal circumstances, newborns mount a metabolic response to ward off starvation until feeding occurs. This survival response involves a process of controlled breakdown of internal energetic sources known as autophagy. Although autophagy has been well documented, the key mechanistic regulators of autophagy in vivo have remained poorly understood.

Whitehead Institute researchers have discovered that a family of nutrient-sensing enzymes, dubbed Rag GTPases, modulates the activity of the mTORC1 protein complex, whose inhibition is essential for autophagy and survival in newborns. The finding, reported this week in the journal Nature, emerges from the lab of Whitehead Member David Sabatini, whose earlier in vitro studies showed that mTORC1 (for "mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1") senses the presence of vital amino acids via interactions with Rag GTPases.

To assess the impact of this Rag GTPase-mTORC1 relationship in mammals, the lab generated mice genetically altered to continually express an active form of the GTPase RagA and compared them with wild-type mice. In normal mice, RagA is activated in the presence of nutrients, and turns on the mTORC1 pathway, which regulates organismal growth in response to nutrient availability. If the mice are deprived of nutrients, RagA is switched off, deactivating mTORC1 and initiating autophagy to tide the animal over until the next feeding. However, in the altered mice, RagA's continuous activity keeps mTORC1 active, despite a dearth of available nutrients. Instead of mTORC1 triggering autophagy, the animals' metabolisms remain unchanged, resulting in nutritional crisis and death.

"What happens to a newborn animal with the RagA enzyme always on is pretty shocking," says Sabatini, who is also a professor of biology at MIT and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator. "A normal neonate animal within an hour after birth responds to that condition, but one with its RagA stuck 'on' doesn't, and it dies. It basically has a huge energetic and nutritional crisis because it can't make the adaption."

These striking results stunned Alejo Efeyan, a postdoctoral researcher in the Sabatini lab, and first author of the Nature that describes this work.

"We were surprised that there was no inhibition of this pathway independent of RagA?that there is no backup system," says Efeyan. "And that RagA is a more global nutrient sensor that goes beyond its known function as an amino acid sensor."

RagA's role as an amino acid sensor had been established in cultured cells by the Sabatini lab. Yet when Efeyan compared nutrient levels in fasting newborn RagA-active mice with those of fasting pups with normal RagA, not only amino acids were reduced in RagA-active animals, also glucose levels were dangerously low. The animals were unable to "sense" either of these reductions, so autophagy failed to initiate in the RagA-active pups, which all died within hours of birth.

This newly identified function for RagA suggests much remains unknown about the cell biology of nutrient sensing, an area of research that Sabatini and his lab continue to investigate.
