'Beverly Hills Cop' Pilot Isn't Moving To A New Network

EW:

The "Beverly Hills Cop" TV spin-off planned for CBS seemed to be a foregone conclusion, with a star in place (Brandon T. Jackson), a TV vet as the new police chief (Christine Lahti), and even the promise of occasional visits from original star Eddie Murphy as Detective Axel Foley. But in May, it was announced that CBS had passed on the hour-long drama, leaving the pilot's future up in the air.

Car leasing is back with a vengeance - Fortune Features

By Doron Levin, contributor

Get one cheap.

Get one cheap.

FORTUNE -- The Newport Beach, California periodontist who trades regularly among the latest Mercedes, BMW and Lexus sedans is typical of a client that prefers to lease, rather than to buy, vehicles. Now her assistant, who keeps his Honda Civic for a long stretch, is leasing as well.

The recovering U.S. auto market has been characterized, in part, by a rising percentage of customers who are leasing cars, notably non-luxury buyers. Last year the percentage of those leasing reached 22%; this year it could break through 25%, according to Edmunds.com. Low interest rates and strong pricing for used cars are two factors behind the trend.

"Luxury brands have for a long time relied on leasing to maximize their sales volumes. Now mainstream brands are riding that wave, drawing buyers with the promise of lower monthly payments through leasing," says Jessica Caldwell, an analyst for Edmunds.com.

MORE:?Detroit's bankruptcy is an utter defeat

Many younger buyers have been attracted by lease deals because they can more easily understand a monthly payment and the simplicity of returning a vehicle after a set period of time?as opposed to a fixed price that is complicated by a down payment and several financing options. Many also like the option of buying the car at a set price at the end of the lease period.

But those holding the lease (often the automakers themselves) may get burned if the so-called residual value of the car?the projected price at the end of the lease period?doesn't live up to expectations due to a soft market for used vehicles. Sometimes automaker lending arms create low monthly payments and unrealistically high residuals to disguise what actually is a financial incentive to buy.

Monthly payments for lease vehicles are usually lower than payments for purchased vehicles that are financed with a loan. But (as Edmunds.com points out) if a motorist decides to drive a car for six years or more, the purchase of a slightly used vehicle is more cost efficient than new or leased vehicles.

MORE:?The subtle art of managing your annoying boss

Larry Dominique, president of ALG, a company that tracks residual values and lease rates, said "we have seen automakers that traditionally didn't lease, such as Hyundai and Kia, are embracing the practice due to increased residual values." Rising quality and tight availability of Korean brands has raised transaction prices of new vehicles, making used vehicle prices stronger as well.

A vehicle lease is an agreement whereby a third-party financial institution owns the car, the user of the vehicle agreeing to pay a monthly rate and return the vehicle after a specific period of time, with no more than a set number of miles on the odometer. The agreement usually contains a financial penalty for exceeding the mileage limit.

ALG is bullish on the continued increased in the strength of residual values, which comes from rising demand for vehicles. Used-car supply is tight, Dominique said, "which is causing an unnaturally high value on used cars. We don't expect the supply of used cars to return to where it was in 2007 [when the car market tanked] until 2017."

MORE:?Is there a silver lining for Detroit?

A big disadvantage of a vehicle lease, getting stuck for a long time with a vehicle you don't like, has an up-to-date digital remedy. For a fee, Swapalease.com matches motorists who want to get out of their lease with those who might be interested in assuming them.

The auto companies have too fresh a memory of the last collapse to tempt a new one with residual values that wildly unrealistic. Still the threat of a new bubble is never too distant, which is why lower and lower monthly payments may trigger alarm bells.

Year of accomplishments at Northwest Passage | ABC Newspapers

One of the four pillars of the Northwest Passage High School, Coon Rapids, mission statement is ?Seeking our Path.?

It is most often used to describe each student?s freedom to design their own individualized learning plan, but can also be seen within the staffing, curriculum delivery and expansion of opportunities as the school transitions into the future, according to Peter Wieczorek, director.

The 2012-13 school year was a year full of changes, accomplishments and exploration for the high school, Wieczorek said.

The year started with several staffing changes and additions. Wieczorek, veteran biology teacher and adviser, accepted the position of director.

Social studies teacher Ryan Haasch led a music production class that is working to build a recording studio in a former supply closet, while special education teacher Anna Benz expanded and enriched the gardening program by using community experts and finding donated supplies.

Thirteen students participated in this year?s Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs STARS statewide competition taking home a first place in audio video promotion and a first place in advertising, plus a sixth place in human relations/decision making. Three other teams also made the finals in audio video promotion.

Six students from the Service Learning Council traveled to Denver, Colo., for the National Service Learning Conference to present the schoolwide integration of service learning across the curriculum.

Advisory ambassadors visited the state capitol to meet with legislators and discuss the value of charter schools to students in Minnesota.

A schoolwide partnership with the Minnesota Literacy Council continued with students conducting email correspondence with adult English language learners in St. Paul.

The school year concluded with 27 seniors graduating.

Travel, in the form of educational expeditions, continues to be a focus of the school, according to Wieczorek. All students participated in an advisory retreat to YMCA Camp Icaghowan.

Additional expeditions included dog sledding and snowshoeing in Ely, winter camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, backpacking in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, shoreline restoration on Grand Isle outside New Orleans, La., and exploring the nation?s capital in Washington D.C.

This past year also included a number of firsts for the school, Wieczorek said. In April students planned and organized the first ever prom with over 60 participants.

Several fundraising events took place for the first time including a Give MN campaign that saw Wieczorek ride the roller coaster at Mall of America for three straight hours and an ?Explore Your World? silent auction with the Wildlife Science Center to raise funds for the school?s expedition program.

As the 2013-14 school year approaches the transition will continue, according to Wieczorek. ?Staff is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the school?s largest group of incoming freshman,? Wieczorek said.

?There will be an increased focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math projects, including upgrades to innovative technologies. A student designed recording studio should be completed in early 2014 and monthly student run expos featuring music, spoken word, performances and a coffee shop will begin in October.

?Despite all of the changes, Northwest Passage High School will continue to prepare students for post-secondary success by offering student-focused curriculum, a safe small learning community and opportunities for students to explore their world with educational expeditions.?

Northwest Passage High School is a tuition-free public charter school located in Coon Rapids.

Helpful Tips For Tackling Your Home Improvement Projects ...

Home improvement is the best method to increase the value of your home. There are many things to keep in mind when making changes to your home. This article will provide a number of tips to help you make the best home improvement choices for you and your family.

A kitchen remodel is less expensive if you refinsh existing cabinets. You can give them a completely new look by painting the bases and changing the doors. This is an inexpensive task that can be done in a weekend, and it will give your home a fresh, new feel.

You can renew the appearance of your walls by spackling small holes and painting. You can find spackle at any home improvement shop. Small amounts should suffice, should the holes not be too large. A bobby pin can be used to fill small holes, by applying spackle with the tip. Once it dries, use something rigid to smooth it over the hole. Then paint. This will allow you to get rid of holes in your walls quickly.

If you happen to notice leaking water underneath the sink or tap, then never try fixing the leak on your own. You can collect the water while you are waiting.

Even if certain home improvement supplies look like a great deal, you should do some comparison shopping before you buy them. Flooring is one area where it?s all too easy to spend more than you need to; comparison shopping will help you zero in on the best deals. Between the discount outlets you can find and the bargain-hunting resources available to you, you may be able to save significant amounts of money.

It is important that any home improvement task you start takes into account your budget, skill level and functionality before you begin. As one of your most valuable assets, your home can be a comfortable abode for you, your family and future generations if you perform the necessary upkeep and improvements.

Tito Vilanova steps down as Barcelona coach

Tito Vilanova is stepping down as Barcelona's coach following a recurrence of throat cancer, just a month before Lionel Messi and his teammates begin the defence of their Spanish league title.

Club president Sandro Rosell told a hurriedly called news conference at Barcelona's training facility on Friday that Vilanova will "follow a treatment" that will be "incompatible" with staying on as coach.

Rosell said that a new head coach would be named next week and that Barcelona was cancelling its first friendly of the preseason, scheduled to be played in Poland on Saturday against Lechia Gdansk.

Spanish media was rife with speculation that little-known Joan "Rubi" Ferrer would replace Vilanova. Ferrer was hired on June 28 as Barcelona's new assistant coach after his strong season with Catalan club Girona in the second division.

In Vilanova's single season in charge he led Barcelona to the Spanish league title with a record-tying point 100 points. In doing so, he played his part in denying Real Madrid a major trophy and the exit of counterpart Jose Mourinho, the man who originally made Vilanova famous for poking him in the eye during a scuffle between the two heated rivals.

The 44-year-old Vilanova had twice previously been obliged to take a medical break from his duties at Barcelona, once as Pep Guardiola's assistant in the 2011-12 season and again as its manager last season.

Recurrent tumour

The quiet-spoken coach had battled the recurrent tumour in a saliva gland and had returned to work on both occasions.

As recently as April, Vilanova said that he felt fine and "had never thought about quitting" the job of coach that he called "his life."

But at that point his doctors had encouraged him to continue working. Now, that has apparently changed.

"This is a piece of news I would have never in my life wanted to give," Rosell told a packed media room including Barcelona's first team with Messi and captain Carles Puyol.

"After evaluating the results of the routine tests and checkups for Tito Vilanova, the option arose of following a treatment that will be incompatible with the development of the responsibilities as the coach of the first team," Rosell said.

Vilanova was not in attendance.

He first fell ill in Nov. 2011 and had to have surgery. He then had a second tumour removed last December and travelled to New York several times to receive further treatment.

In his absence last season, assistant Jordi Roura took over to mixed results in the Champions League before Bayern Munich crushed Barcelona 7-0 on aggregate in the semifinals ? with Vilanova back on the touchline.

First as Guardiola's assistant, Vilanova provided the tactical know-how that helped his boss forge one of the best teams in the history of the sport ? winning 14 of a possible 19 titles from 2008-2012, including two Champions League trophies.

As a young player, Vilanova spent six years at Barcelona's training academy ? from 1984-90 ? but never made it to the topflight team, going on to play for clubs such as Celta Vigo and Mallorca before his playing career was cut short by a serious knee injury. That injury led Vilanova into coaching and to Barcelona's cadets, tutoring current first-team players Messi, Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Pique.

Vilanova moved on from Barcelona to work as sport director at third division club Terrassa before answering Guardiola's call to help him take Barca B up from the third division in 2007-08.

Barcelona is set to play Bayern, Guardiola's new club, in a friendly on Wednesday.

"This is a very hard blow, but we have bounced back from others," Rosell said. "You must think about the individuals first and ... the club second."
