The only personal finance chart you need ?- 7million7years

When I?m not blogging, you can often find me hanging around on Quora, the brilliant question and answer site ?

? and, that?s where I found Chris Han?s personal finance chart (to the left).

Chris says:

  1. Wealth is the shaded area in the diagram.
  2. You can increase the shaded area by increasing the slope of the green line, or by decreasing the slope of the red line.
  3. Decreasing the slope of the red line becomes significantly harder over time as you grow accustomed to your lifestyle.

Chris is right, but he needs to add a 4th bullet-point, and it?s the same observation that I made when I used a similar chart in this post to explain how businesses should manage their finances for growth:

4.?Notice that it is easier to grow Wealth dramatically by increasing the slope of the green Income line than it is to decrease the slope of the red Expense line.

So, let?s break this down ?

Regular personal finance will tell you to concentrate on the red (expense) line.

These authors will say that frugality, paying yourself first, and debt reduction (thereby, reducing your interest expense) will increase your wealth through the combined effect of:

- Decreasing expenses, and

- Time.

Decreased expenses allow you to save more, and time allows the full effect of compounding.

Voila!?40 years to fortune!

But, I think that you give up too much for too little, if you follow their advice:

First of all, you give up too many of life?s little pleasures now for little-to-no-reward later (if you can?t afford the lattes now, you sure won?t be able to in retirement).

Next, you have to wait ? hence work ? for far too long.

Instead, you should focus on the line that they are missing: the green (income) line. If you take my advice, you will concentrate on:

- Increasing your income,

- Using that increased income to build up a larger investment pool, quicker,

- And, aim to get better returns (hence, even more income) through better ? and, more leveraged (i.e. using even more debt) ? investments

Of course, you can?t simply ignore expenses, but they are best kept in control through delayed gratification, which means:

- Waiting to make purchases; the more major, the longer you should wait, and

- Not increasing your lifestyle (hence expenses) as your income increases.

It is this combination ? increased/reinvested Income and controlled/slow-growth Expenses ? that can quickly create a huge wedge of Wealth.

This is a very useful chart ? you will do well to remember it.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says team is grieving

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Dallas Cowboys players bowed their heads and some of them placed their hands over their hearts during a moment of silence Sunday for a teammate killed in a car accident a day earlier in Texas.

Owner Jerry Jones described his team as grieving before the kickoff of a game against the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium that had playoff implications for both teams. The Cowboys learned on their flight to Cincinnati on Saturday that linebacker Jerry Brown had died in an accident overnight.

Defensive lineman Josh Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter in Irving, Texas, for the early morning accident.

"First of all, I think that our team is grieving and they know that," Jones told Fox for its pregame broadcast. "They also know that they can handle that better if they will go out and do their work and do it to the top of their abilities.

"So it is a way for them to respond and to some degree, I am sure that many of them are proud that they have this to do this afternoon."

It was the second week in a row that an NFL team played a game one day after a team member died. Kansas City linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend, then killed himself at the Chiefs' practice complex in front of his coach and general manager.

Coach Jason Garrett told the Cowboys (6-6) on Saturday night that it was important to play well against the Bengals (7-5). Both teams needed a win to stay in the thick of playoff contention.

"First of all we all know, but we remind ourselves that there is something more important than football, and this is life and certainly the lost life of Jerry," Jones said. "On the other hand, they know the best way they can honor Jerry, because he was such a hard worker, so conscientious and enthusiastic about his career."

The teams observed a moment of silence for Brown before the national anthem. Quarterback Tony Romo put his hand over his heart, as did other Cowboys. Most lowered their heads.

Players around the league were touched by the Cowboys' tragedy.

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman and special teams standout Demarcus Dobbs thought about it before a home game Sunday against Miami. Dobbs was arrested early Nov. 30 ? his 25th birthday ? on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. He missed last week's game at St. Louis but was active for Sunday's game with the Dolphins.

Authorities said Dobbs was alone and involved in a single-car accident in which he hit a chain-link fence and a bush but didn't sustain any injuries.

"It was a wake-up call to me what happened to me," Dobbs said on the field before the game. "The thing that happened in Dallas, it makes me grateful that God was looking out for me. It could have been a lot worse in my situation.

"What happened in Dallas is unfortunate. It just goes to show what could have been. I'm grateful that I'm here and able to be on the team and go on and continue my life. That saddened me to hear that, but it made me count my blessings even more."

Love Of Family & Home: Framed "Joy" Sign For My Mantel (How-To ...

Happy Monday Everyone! (Can Mondays be happy...I'm not sure about that?!)

Did you all have a good weekend?! We certainly did, but as always it just wasn't LONG ENOUGH!!

I wanted to take a few minutes today & show you how I made the framed "JOY" sign for my Christmas Mantel. Are you guys up for that?!

This was an easy & inexpensive project that would look great in any area of your home this Christmas. Seriously....if you have an ounce...maybe even a half of an ounce of creativity, YOU CAN DO THIS!!

Are you ready?! Here we go!

I had the idea for this project several weeks ago. You all were such fans of the Burlap Monogram that my mom & I created last year, so I thought this project would probably go over well too! :) My mom had a yard sale a few weeks back & I immediately saw this picture and thought it would work perfectly.

The frame measured 26.5" x 16.5".

So, I took the print & matte out of the frame.

I cleaned the glass & put it back inside the frame. Then I added the fabric.
I used Osenberg fabric from JoAnn's. This fabric can be somewhat see-thru, so I did end up adding some white cardstock behind the fabric, so that the cardboard backing wouldn't show through on the other side.

After adding the white cardstock, I put the cardboard backing on top of the fabric & then trimmed off the excess.

As for the letters, I purchased them at Hobby Lobby. They were $2.50 a piece, but if you watch the sale ad, they do run them half off from time to time. ?They letters are 9.5" tall.
I gave them a couple coats of white craft paint. I used "Titanium White" by FolkArt.
Once the letters were dry, I grabbed the "O" and decided to fancy it up a bit by adding some pearls. I bought this package at JoAnn Fabrics for $3.99. ?I used just the one package & still had a few pearls to spare!
To adhere the pearls to the letter, I just used hot glue. I found that the easiest way to add the pearls was to line the outside of edges first, & then fill in the middle!
This part of the project was a little time consuming, but well worth it! Just watch your fingers....I didn't make it through this part without a few burns!
Once I was finished adding the pearls to the "O", it was time to adhere the letters to the frame. I used hot glue for this part as well. Just load the back of the letters with hot glue & place them directly on the glass.
Overall, I liked the way it looked at this point, but thought it need just a little something extra. So, I ran out to Walmart & bought 4 greenery picks & some burlap ribbon to make a bow. Then, I hot glued the picks & the bow to the top of the frame.
It was the perfect added touch! :)
Don't you agree?! I just can't get enough of this display! It makes me smile every time I walk past it!
I have had quite a few of you inquire about the book page trees!
I ASSURE you that a tutorial is coming up for those as well!! Stay tuned!!

Oh!! And one last thing, before I go!

Comments - The Day Trading Academy

A ?lot has changed over the course of the last few years, I have managed to turn my life around on several different?occasions?over the last 10 years by getting out of high school with a $25,000 student loan in order to start day trading.

Fast forward a few years and I was in college working for $8 dollars an hour trying to make ends meet.

I was only getting 4 or 5 nights sleep at best every week because I was driven to arrive at what I define as success, freedom.? I understood business and wanted a career where I could work from anywhere, make enough money to not worry about money itself, and not have to answer to anyone.

invest in your future

If I have learned anything in my young life it?s that nothing is impossible, unattainable, or questionably?out of reach.? In the past ten years, the aptly named lost decade, I have been able to achieve my dream.

I am no millionaire because I choose not to be.

I live a much better life than most millionaires would because I refuse to be locked up in an office 365 days of the year.? In the last 6 months alone I have explored the exotic beaches of Brazil, eaten the infamous Ceviche and Tapas of Barcelona, explored the serenity of Easter Island, and have been able to finally day trade from one of the largest financial centers in the world, London.? This of course, is the abbreviated list.

I left on a journey to travel the world only to be called back into what has become my calling, helping others achieve their dreams through day trading.

It?s only a testament that we have just completed a full week of live classes where students of the program have helped us teach other new traders looking for consistency.? While I have been trading for nearly 10 years and coaching others for roughly 8 years, I refused to allow anyone to teach unless they are actually trading live.

No programmers, no friends, no software, no B.S.

Enter what has been an amazing year. There are now so many traders doing so well that I am having to create an entire new curriculum for the advanced & pro traders.? We are hosting our very first pro class this Wednesday, invitation only of course.

Lagoa Paraiso in Brazil

The exotic beach of Lagoa Paraiso (Paradise Lagoon) in Brazil

Everything can always be ?improved.? Just imagine the possibilities and improved success once we have the new curriculum in place coupled with the new pro classes meant to teach traders the even higher effective trades we don?t share in the normal classes? The possibilities are really endless.

The Day Trading Academy training division now hosts over 30 years of experience and each have been handpicked to ensure the highest quality.? We plan on teaching traders not how to pay attention to faulty indicators and software, but instead prepare traders how to understand the market and be able to adapt to it.

The concept is to teach a man how to fish instead of just serving him dinner.? If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. If you teach a man how to fish, you will feed him for a lifetime.

The plan for 2013 is to raise the bar even further.

University studies have proved that only 1 in 10 people that attempt to day trade actually end up making money.? Our odds in the training program & the LTD Project have reached much higher levels and with the focus on helping new traders & advanced traders alike we are going to prepare ourselves for much higher success.

We are going to offer a new Diamond Elite Training Program at the start of the new year.? We have continuously had to deny entrants into the training program due to high demand.

With the improvements and demand at such high rates we will be increasing the prices for all levels of education beginning in the new year.? We are going to host a live trading event this Thursday to provide the full details of the offer that will run until the end of year.

If you have ever wanted to change your life then you should consider investing in a new year?s resolution, make an investment in your future.? I took a calculated risk roughly 10 years ago and took out student loans to live my dream. What are you doing to achieve yours?

Sign up for our live trading event on Thursday December 13th at 1pm EST (12pm CST).

PFT: Steelers can't find a hotel in New York

Atlanta Falcons v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

Philadelphia fans are notoriously vocal, but Eagles defensive end Jason Babin said some of them crossed the line during last week?s loss to the Falcons.

Since he was rotating more with Brandon Graham, he spent more time on the sidelines than usual, and what he heard repulsed him.

?During the game there was a good section of fans chanting some of the most vile things I?ve ever heard,? Babin said, via Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com. ?Not just at a football game, but in life, in general. Talking about attacking Coach [Andy Reid], talking about people?s wives and kids and chanting them. And I just thought there was no place for that in the NFL, none whatsoever.

?Just some of the foul things people were saying. Yeah, I?m gonna be protective of Coach Reid, Coach Wash and my teammates. It was upsetting that a few bad apples were chanting that kind of stuff, but what are you going to do??

Breaking a three-game losing streak would help, but Babin ? who has played for five different teams ? said what he heard was beyond the normal dissatisfied fans.

?But if I could say just one of the things they were chanting, it?s way past bad, it?s foul,? he said. ?I?ve never heard ? listen, I don?t want to even repeat what I heard, it was that bad. And I?ve got a pretty high threshold for adult jokes, to give you an idea of what they?re saying.?

Philadelphia?s crowd has a reputation for a reason, having booed Santa Claus and an injured Michael Irvin. But a segment of the population seems intent on driving that image lower and lower.

10 holiday budgeting tips | MNN - Mother Nature Network

?Tis the season to spend money. The winter holiday season is quickly approaching, and that means retailers are preparing to go from the red to the black as consumers spend, spend, spend. Holiday shopping doesn?t have to break the bank, though; simply follow these 10 holiday budgeting tips and you won?t wake up with a post-holiday financial hangover in the new year.

?

1. Make a list and check it twice ? Make a list of everyone who is typically on your holiday gift-giving list. After creating your list, give it another look and determine if you can eliminate anyone from this year's list. For example, that neighbor three blocks away who you only see once a year when you exchange gifts is probably a safe one to remove.

?

2. Set a realistic budget and stick to it ? Now that you have a good idea of who you need to buy gifts for, set a limit on how much you will spend on each person or family and stick to it.

?

3. Skip the credit cards ? Cash is truly king. Leave the plastic at home and only bring the cash you?ve set aside for holiday shopping. This makes it difficult to overspend. Also avoid any 90-days-same-as-cash type deals; it isn?t the same as cash and if you?re even an hour late with your payment, you will be hit with finance charges and possibly penalties.

?

4. Kids only ? If there are a lot of kids in your family, get together with all of the adults and discuss a kids-only holiday. My family decided on this method years ago, and not only do we save money, but we also save a lot of stressed-out shopping moments. As adults we typically buy what we want and/or need, so figuring out what to buy another adult is always challenging.

?

5. Opt out of the office gift exchange ? Skip the traditional office gift exchange and propose a day of service instead. Bond with coworkers and get into the holiday spirit by donating your time to wrap presents or fill food boxes at the local food bank.

?

6. No emotional purchases ? Let?s face it, if you?re stressed out, you?re going to spend more. Take the emotions out of your holiday purchases and stick to your original plan. Don?t get caught up in the hype of Black Friday sales; do you really need another television? Probably not.

?

7. Shop early ? Since you already have a list, shopping early is easy. If you wait until the last minute to do your shopping, you?re not only left at the retailer?s pricing mercy but if you?re stressed, you will probably spend more than you planned.

?

8. Homemade gifts ? If you?re crafty a homemade gift can be the perfect gift. If you?re a whiz in the kitchen, a plate of homemade treats will go a long way. Think about that neighbor you want to cross off your gift-giving list ? would he enjoy a holiday-themed box of sweet treats instead?

?

9. Skip extended warranties ? Every time I shop I?m amazed by a new extended warranty offer. A recent trip to buy a pair of $10 headphones at the office supply store came with a $2 extended warranty offer. In most cases, as in the case of a cheap set of headphones, extended warranties don?t justify the cost.

?

10. Learn from last year ? If last year?s shopping season was a budget-busting disaster, then now is the time to learn from your mistakes. Pull out your credit card bills or bank statements from last holiday season and see where you overspent and figure out how to avoid repeating that mistake this year.

?

What is your favorite holiday budgeting tip?
