NEW ORLEANS -- Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Walt Handelsman will deliver the keynote address Saturday, Oct. 20, at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exposition in New Orleans.
Handelsman is a two-time Pulitzer winner and nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist for Newsday. His talk promises to be a spirited take on politics, social media and pop culture through drawings and animation. Readers of Newsday, Newsweek, Time, USA Today and many other media outlets will recognize his distinctive artistic style and well-known signature. In addition to sketch cartoons, Handelsman has been crafting animated cartoons for the Web since 2006.
"I'm excited about my presentation to the AAP in New Orleans," he said. "Through my editorial cartoons and animations, we'll take a lively look at politics and social issues, including child nutrition, education and parenting."
Topics of his cartoons have run the gamut. Recently he has touched on politics, health care, media, technology and other issues on the minds of American readers.
Handelsman worked in New Orleans for The Times-Picayune from 1989 to 2001, before joining the Newsday staff in 2001. "I'm going to bring a handful of my cartoons from when I worked in New Orleans and give a little spice of the hometown I have a deep, deep, deep love for New Orleans," he said.
In addition to winning the Pulitzers in 2007 and 1997, he has won every major journalism award for editorial cartooning excellence, including the 2007 Online News Association Best commentary Award, the 2003 Scripps Howard National Journalism award, the 1996 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the 1993 and 1989 National Headliner Award and the 1992 Society of Professional Journalists Award.
Handelsman promises an informative and enlightening talk for pediatricians attending the AAP conference. "It's a fast-paced presentation and unique in the sense that most people don't have a chance to interact or have a presentation from a cartoonist or animator. If laughter is the best medicine-- this is a prescription for fun."
