Today Civil Society Group ?Aawaaz?, students of Punjab University, Dramebaaz Club and Yuva Dharti staged a protest from Rock Garden to Governor House, Haryana to demand justice for a young girl Jyoti who has been murdered by the MLA from Himachal Pradesh Ram Kumar Chaudhary and also to demand justice for a gang-raped on a moving bus in Delhi exactly a week ago, and to call for more serious punishment for sexual crimes. The protest was joined by large chunk of people who were raising slogans against the government for delay in punishing the rapists. Protesters then marched towards Haryana?s Governor house with a hope that the governor may pay heed to their voice but to no avail. ?Sunil Bansal & Harjit Singh Bhullar said that such crimes and criminals should be dealt strictly so that people with such criminal mindset should not dare to think about committing such a heinous act. Aawaaz demanded that MLA who was involved in the murder of Jyoti should be hanged or at least be given stricter punishment to set an example in society. There is a public anger among the students for the lathi charge being done on them by police at Delhi. ?Gaurav Goel, Advocate & Varun Giri demanded stern action against the rapists and said government?s negligent attitude would not help in stopping such doings in society. Girls should feel safe wherever they are and it is the duty fo the government to make them feel safe.?The team of Dramebaj club led by Sparsh and his team held a street play (nukad natak) to aware the public that the girls are not safe and immediate action shakl be taken to protect the girls. The public anger is such that some have demanded the immediate execution of the rapists. ?Mandeep the student of Punjab University said the government?s failure to gauge the mood of the people and its unwillingness to engage with demonstrators has sharpened the fury and frustration of a country that is seeking urgent change in laws and safety.

Maine West suspends coach in hazing scandal

A group of parents showed support tonight at a board meeting on two Maine West High School soccer coaches accused of being involved in reported hazing at the school. (WGN - Chicago)

One of the two coaches linked to allegations of hazing on athletic teams at Maine West High School has been suspended without pay by the district while officials pursue his dismissal.

Maine Township High School District 207 reached that unanimous decision on the fate of Michael Divincenzo, a physical education teacher, former freshman baseball coach and current head boys and girls varsity soccer coach, after spending almost three hours in closed session Wednesday night at the district headquarters in Park Ridge.

"The board believes Mr. Divincenzo violated District 207 Board of Education policy and professional expectations by failing to adequately prevent, recognize, report and punish student hazing," board President Sean Sullivan said in a statement.

Divincenzo and freshman boys and girls soccer coach Emilio Rodriguez were put on paid leave and reassigned from teaching duties while the district and authorities investigate allegations of hazing on the school's soccer and baseball teams.

Divincenzo, a tenured teacher, has 17 days to request a hearing on his dismissal through the Illinois State Board of Education, Sullivan said. A hearing could take up to one year.

The board will continue consideration of any disciplinary action against other staff members involved in hazing allegations.

Earlier Wednesday night, more than 60 people, many of them former students and athletes, packed a public meeting Wednesday night to speak on behalf of the coaches.

"These two individuals that we're talking about today, they meant a lot to each and every one of us that's in this room today," said Alex Esquivel, a 2009 Maine West graduate and former soccer player, at a meeting in Maine Township High School District 207's headquarters in Park Ridge. "(Divincenzo) always stressed nothing but respect on and off the field. As a whole, I think he strived to make each and every one of us better men."

A 1994 Maine West graduate, Josh Thvedt said he has known Divincenzo since they were 5 years old. He said he's still in contact with Divincenzo.

"He's doing the best he possibly can under the circumstances," Thvedt said. "I think he'll try to find a way to move on. He's not a quitter."

Attorney Tony Romanucci, who is representing four athletes from the Des Plaines school in a lawsuit against the coaches and school officials, said after the public comments that he respected the opinions of those who spoke in defense of the coaches. But he said the accusers "suffer in silence."

Year Ends with Mixed Outlook for Microsoft & Nokia

Earlier this week?Appcelerator?released its quarterly mobile app developer survey. The survey of more than 2,700 global developers found they were primarily focused on the iOS and Android operating systems, with Windows Phones, RIM and others relatively far behind. This reflects the "duopoloy" of iOS and Android (increasingly "Samdroid') sales in the global smartphone market. ?

The challenges of creating a strong developer ecosystem for Windows is partly what's holding the mobile OS back. Sales are relatively good in isolated EU markets (e.g, Spain, UK) but lackluster on a global basis and in North America in particular, where Windows continues to lose market share.

According to the survey, about 36% of developers indicated interest in building apps for Windows devices. However Windows Phone's modest market share is creating a kind of Catch-22 for the platform. ?

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 9.45.10 AM

Without boosting the perception that Windows has app-parity (at least among the most important ones), there won't be more handset sales. Without more handset sales there won't be more consumer usage and without consumer adoption there are few incentives -- except direct payments from Microsoft -- to develop for the platform. The majority of developers, according to the Appcelerator survey, can only focus on two mobile platforms.?

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 9.45.32 AM

Separately, IHS iSuppli released a full-year, 2012?estimate?of?global smartphone market share. The calculation is based on the untrustworthy "shipments" metric. However, the company shows Nokia dropping to third position, Apple in second and Samsung-Android now leading iOS "decisively":

Samsung and Apple ended 2011 in a neck-and-neck battle for leadership in the smartphone market, with only 1 percentage point of market share separating them. However, entering the 2012 year, Samsung moved ahead decisively ahead of Apple with a wide range of Android smartphone offerings. Samsung made significant gains in both the high end as well as the low-cost market with its Galaxy line of smartphones. This diversified market approach has allowed Samsung to address a larger target audience for its phones than Apple?s limited premium iPhone line.

The Samsung and Apple duopoly represents the dominant force in the smartphone market, with the two companies accounting for 49 percent of shipments in 2012, up from 39 percent in 2011. While Nokia and Canada?s Research in Motion (RIM) also held double-digit shares of the market in 2011, Samsung and Apple remain the only two players that will each command a double-digit portion of the smartphone space in 2012.

? Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 4.10.38 PM

As Google-owned Motorola, LG and HTC struggle for consumer attention and handset sales, Samsung becomes more and more identified with Android in the consumer mind. RIM's forthcoming BlackBerry 10 OS is truly the company's "last hope." Nokia too will likely need to do something fairly radical if it is to remain viable (i.e., adopt Android) in the smartphone market.?

Christie begins re-election campaign with endorsement from major labor union

ABERDEEN ? In the first public event of his re-election campaign and a coup for any Republican, Gov. Chris Christie today accepted the support of one of the state?s largest labor unions.

?This campaign just started, but I doubt I?ll have better days than the day I was endorsed by the Laborers? International Union of North America,? Christie said.

LIUNA vice president Ray Pocino delivered the governor the union?s support and with it the manpower and resources of 20,000 members in New Jersey. He ticked off a list of building projects and construction funds revived during Christie?s administration, including the $2.5 billion Revel casino and a $750 million bond for education infrastructure. Four years ago, the powerful labor leader pledged his support to the Democrat, then-Gov. Jon Corzine.

?You have earned our support,? Pocino told Christie. ?You have earned the right to finish the job you have started in our opinion.?

Standing on a stage in the Laborers Local 472's training center, Christie and First Lady Mary Pat faced a sea of members wearing orange shirts with ?LIUNA! Builds America. Feel the Power.? Air horns blared as members cheered and waved ?Jersey Jobs? signs.

As he has before, Christie underlined what he sees as the fundamental divide between public sector unions representing teachers, with whom he has fought bitterly, and labor unions.

?Nobody deserves a layup,? Christie said during his 20-minute remarks.

?He understands that in our line of work if there is no work, there is no pay check and there are no benefits,? Pocino said.

The endorsement is also a rejection of Democrats rumored to be considering getting into the race. The only declared so far is state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex).

?I am not in this race for re-election just for the hell of it,? Christie said. ?I am in this race ? and I believe you are in it with me ? because we are gonna win and we are gonna win big.?

The Christies stuck around to pose for photographs.

Syria says opposition could use chemical weapons

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Syria's U.N. ambassador is warning that extremist groups could use chemical weapons against the Syrian people and blame the government.

Bashar Ja'afari reiterated in letters, circulated Monday, to the U.N. Security Council and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that the Syrian government is "genuinely worried" that foreign countries could provide chemical weapons to armed groups "and then claim they had been used by the Syrian government."

Although the West has shown little desire to intervene in Syria, President Barack Obama has said the regime's use of chemical weapons against the rebels would be a "red line" and change his "calculus" about a conflict.

As the prospect of intervention gains traction, the Syrian government has been careful to never actually confirm it has chemical weapons and is instead trying to raise fears it may be framed by rebels using such weapons to spur an outside attack.

Recent U.S. intelligence reports, however, showed the Syrian regime may be readying its chemical weapons and could be desperate enough to use them.

Ja'afari in his letter reiterated that "Syria will not under any circumstances use any chemical weapons that it may have."

He said instead the Syrian government is defending its people "from terrorists backed by well-known states, at the forefront of which is the United States of America." The Syrian regime and state media refer to rebels fighting to oust the government of President Bashar Assad as terrorists.

Ja'afari recalled that when U.N. monitors were in Syria, the government asked that a U.N. team visit a privately owned chlorine laboratory east of Aleppo "to inspect and secure the contents, which terrorist groups were planning to bring under their control."

U.N. monitors were unable to visit, however, because they came under fire, he said.

He expressed regret that no action has been taken to address these developments and hold rebel groups accountable.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told reporters after briefing the Security Council on Monday that the U.N. is sending in kits to protect soldiers in the U.N. peacekeeping force on Syria's border with Israel from the effects of a possible chemical attack.

He said the United Nations doesn't have the ability to verify reports by a number of countries that Syria possesses and might use chemical weapons. But "we don't want to take a risk," Ladsous said.

The Syria uprising started in March 2011 as peaceful protests but quickly turned into a civil war after the government's brutal crackdown on dissent. Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed.

On Sunday, fighter jets screamed over Damascus to bomb two areas in the southern part of the capital. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said fighter jets carried out six airstrikes in the Hajar Aswad area and the neighboring Yarmouk Palestinian camp, where the rebels have been advancing.

The U.N. secretary-general spoke to Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Monday morning to express concern about the escalation of violence in recent days and especially the attack on Yarmouk, U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

In a letter to the Security Council, Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour condemned the attack which killed at least 25 people, injured dozens of others and sent thousands of panicked Palestinian refugees fleeing mainly towards Lebanon for safety.

Palestinian refugees have been in Syria since 1948 and have sought to stay out of the current conflict and remain neutral, as have Palestinian leaders, he said.

Monday in politics: The return of gun control, ?fiscal cliff? progress, and more

Washington returns to work Monday for the first time since Friday's school shooting in Connecticut and a major new issue ? or, more accurately,? an old one long deemed too politically hot to touch ? may be on the agenda.

While President Obama didn't directly address gun control in his emotional speech Sunday night at a vigil in Newtown, Conn., he did vow to wield "whatever power this office holds" to prevent similar tragedies, a suggestion that his administration might be ready to tackle the politically treacherous topic.

Democratic lawmakers, as well as independent Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, went farther, calling for a ban on military-style assault weapons and the establishment of a national commission on mass shootings.

"I think we could be at a tipping point ... a tipping point where we might actually get something done," said New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer on CBS News' "Face the Nation."

Expect the gun-control rhetoric to heat up in the days and weeks to come; whether that will translate to real movement on the issue remains to be same.

Meanwhile, could there be reason for optimism, or at least less pessimism, in the "fiscal cliff" talks.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner has reportedly offered to accept a tax-rate increase on the wealthiest Americans as part of a deal to avert the steep tax hikes and spending cuts set to kick in at the start of the year.

However, Boehner wants only those earning over $1 million to pay the higher tax rates, while Obama puts the threshold at $250,000.

Still, Boehner's move is a significant step that one policy expert says "fundamentally transforms fiscal cliff negotiations."

Secretary of State Clinton is recovering at home Monday following the concussion she sustained last week after fainting. Her doctors are advising her to rest and cancel all work events for the next week.

And speculation is continuing about the man expected to replace Clinton as the nation's top diplomat, Sen. John Kerry, as well as another old Washington hand, former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel, widely seen as Obama's top pick to be the next secretary of defense.

Also Monday, the State Department is expected to receive the results of the independent review of the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. Criticism of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's handling of the Benghazi attack ultimately led her to withdraw her name from consideration for the State job and set Kerry up as the favorite.

And then there is this: Members of the Electoral College meet today to cast their votes for president and vice president, part of the process leading up to President Obama's second inaugural on Jan. 21.

Susan Rice Surrenders

157166650 U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Nov. 29, 2012

Photo by Henny Ray Abrams/AFP/Getty Images.

Susan Rice has withdrawn her name from consideration as secretary of state, so the next topic of discussion in Washington political circles is clear: Was this a defeat for President Barack Obama and a victory for Sen. John McCain?

McCain had been the most adamant, among a handful of Republicans, who blamed Rice for her role in spreading false information about the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The criticism was spurious. Rice did go on several Sunday talk shows and say that the attack stemmed from spontaneous protests against an American-made anti-Muslim video?an analysis that turned out to be untrue. But it was very clear?and no one has disputed?that Rice was merely reciting a ?talking-points? memo circulated by the U.S. intelligence community. As U.N. ambassador, Rice had no line of authority over events in Libya. Nor, interestingly, did McCain or the others blame Secretary Clinton, who was formally responsible, or then-CIA director David Petraeus, who helped write the talking points?perhaps because they are both friends of his, whereas Rice had lashed out at McCain while serving as Obama?s foreign-policy adviser during the 2008 presidential campaign.

After McCain?s first assault on Rice, Obama came to her defense, calling the assault on her character ?outrageous? and inviting McCain and the others to come after him. Only a few other Republicans rallied behind McCain. It seemed that Rice, if nominated, would be confirmed with a healthy margin, albeit after some struggle.

But then McCain pulled a very clever gambit, announcing publicly that he would seek a chair on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (while retaining his status as top Republican on the Armed Services Committee). This would give him a direct role in the interrogation and confirmation of Rice or any other nominee for secretary of state and, indeed, the entire tier of assistant secretaries and undersecretaries. It would also allow him to request hearings and to call the secretary as a witness on any number of topics that he and his Republican colleagues might wish to investigate. He could be a constant thorn in the administration?s side on an issue?foreign policy, broadly speaking?that presidents are usually allowed to pursue with great leeway and that this president has pursued with success and high ratings.

In the end, with all the other fights Obama has on his hands in his second term, this one didn?t seem worth the struggle. As Rice herself put it in a letter released this afternoon, ?I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly?to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities. ? Therefore, I respectfully request that you no longer consider my candidacy at this time.?

A White House spokesman said in an email this afternoon that McCain?s attacks had nothing to do with Rice?s decision. A spokesman on McCain?s staff said in a phone conversation that Rice?s pending nomination had nothing to do with his decision to seek a seat on the Foreign Relations Committee. Both statements deserve a cocked eyebrow.

This was certainly a political confrontation, and Obama backed down. But that doesn?t mean, necessarily, that he lost or that McCain won?at least not on any issue beyond whether Susan Rice will be nominated as secretary of state, something Obama hadn?t yet done in any event. It doesn?t necessarily tilt the outcome of any conflict to come.

What To Get Your Boyfriend For Christmas | YourTango

what to get your boyfriend for christmas
Surprise, it's not a shirt!

"He's so hard to buy for!" Not anymore. We've handpicked gifts for nine common "types" of guys.

You know him better than anyone else, so why is so hard to pinpoint the right gift for your boyfriend?! Never fear; let us be your personal shoppers. We've zeroed in on nine of the most specific types of guys ? from sports fans to sartorialists ? and picked presents that will bring joy to your boyfriend's world, whether he's been naughty or nice.?

1. Sports nut
There are 2 kinds of guys into sports: couch-bound quarterbacks and dudes who think they smell better basted in their own sweat. Both men thrive on the experience. A shot of adrenaline when something extraordinary happens, the bro-zy camaraderie of us versus them and the sweet taste of a well-deserved beverage. Get the sports nut in your life tickets to see his team of choice (yes, it's best to bite the bullet and get one for yourself too ? unless you enjoy it, too. Then, even better!). Check out Stubhub.com, and try to score the best seats possible from other fans.

2. Music snob
Is your guy crazy into Band You?ve Never Heard Of? Does he insist everyone?s new stuff sucks? Does he worship Jeff Lynne as his personal lord and savior? Normally, I?d say to give that guy a recorder and let him make music for you but instead, go for something that will let him experience his music in his own little world. IPick him up a pair of high-end headphones, like Bose's QuietComfort Acoustic Noise-Canceling Headphones.?

3. Comedy nerd
It?s not all wieners and fart jokes, ladies. From reveling in the majesty of Louie to sad clowning it up with Marc Maron to laughing at, well, really esoteric fart and wiener jokes with The State, some of us take our comedy VERY seriously. If you live in New York, Los Angeles or Chicago, you could get your guy improv lessons but there are a quarter of a billion US citizens who live outside of those MSAs. Instead, give him a history lesson. Give your comedy nerd the audio version of Steve Martin?s Born Standing Up?or Tina Fey's?Bossypants

4. Bookworm
For your fella, reading is FUNdamental. He?s read the classics. Amazon just sends him books after a favorable review in The Atlantic. Your casual-reading Kung Fu is no match for his literati karate. Forget getting him some horse plop tablet reader, get him something classic, something collectable, something leatherbound. Get your bookworm a collectible leatherbound version of his favorite novel or a unique, antique book from a classic 19th century author. Try sites like Easton Press Books and Poor Man's Books?? or visit a local antique books dealer.

5. Workaholic
our busy bee has no hands because his fingers have been worked past the bone. Lots of men define themselves by how their bills get paid, but your guy burns the midnight oil before the REAL nitty gritty gets done. While he probably needs a reminder that his mighty empire won?t fit in his coffin, it?s the holiday season, so get him something that can go in a slightly smaller box. Get your little workaholic the gift of relaxation: a private session with massage therapist ? and maybe even give you a few pointers for conducting future at-home massage sessions. Look up a massage therapist in your area at Spa Finder.?Keep reading...

Foreclosures hit nine-month high, but starts drop

Foreclosures completed by banks rose to a nine-month high in November, but there's some good news: The number of homes starting on the path to foreclosure fell to the lowest level in six years.

In this 2011 file photo, a foreclosed house with sale pending sign is shown in Tigard, Ore. There's good news and bad news on the hosuing front. Completed foreclosures hit a nine-month high in November, but homes starting on the path to forecolsure decreased to the lowest level in six years.

U.S. home repossessions rose to a nine-month high in November, even as the number of homes starting on the path to?foreclosure?declined to the lowest level in six years.

Banks completed?foreclosure?on 59,134 homes last month, an increase of 11 percent from October and up 5 percent from November last year,?foreclosure?listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

Last month marked the first annual increase in bank repossessions since October 2010, when allegations of abuses by the mortgage industry compelled many lenders to temporarily halt?foreclosures.

But the number of homes entering the?foreclosure?process or scheduled for auction for the first time, so-called?foreclosure?starts, sank to 77,494. That's a decline of 13 percent from October and a drop of 28 percent from November last year, the firm said.

It's also the lowest number of?foreclosure?starts since they hit 72,163 in December 2006.

The combination of declining?foreclosure?starts and a sharp increase in the number of homes taken back by lenders signals that banks are moving to complete?foreclosures?on homes with mortgages that have gone unpaid for a year or two, if not longer.

And it's likely that the borrowers who owned these homes already tried to refinance, get a loan modification or sell the home as a short sale ? when the bank agrees to accept less than what is owned on the mortgage ? but did not succeed, said Daren Blomquist, a vice president at RealtyTrac.

"Now?foreclosure?is the final recourse the banks have to go forward on these properties," Blomquist said.

There are close to 1 million U.S. homes that are in some stage of the?foreclosure?process, and any of those could potentially end up repossessed by a lender.

But several factors are now working to stem, or in some cases merely delay,?foreclosures. That's a stark change from two or three years ago, when the?foreclosure?crisis was more severe.

Mortgage servicers and banks are increasingly favoring short sales as an alternative to?foreclosure. Efforts by federal and state lawmakers to slow down the?foreclosure?process or make loan modifications a more likely option for homeowners also are having an impact. And borrowers are getting better about keeping up with mortgage payments.

The percentage of mortgage-holding homeowners who were at least two months behind on their payments sank in the third quarter to the lowest level in more than three years, according to credit reporting firm TransUnion.

In addition, an improving housing market, rising home prices and stronger hiring likely has helped some homeowners avoidforeclosure.

Even so, bank repossessions remain elevated and on pace to exceed 650,000 this year, according to RealtyTrac. That would be down from 800,000 last year.

"We're seeing more signs of the light at the end of the tunnel, with?foreclosure?starts being down," Blomquist said. "But the market still has to deal with the properties that already started?foreclosure, and that could keep the (bank repossession) numbers stubbornly high the next year."

Also, lenders are still adjusting to new?foreclosure?ground rules set forth in a $25 billion settlement reached in February between five major banks and federal and state government officials over claims that many lenders had processed?foreclosures?without verifying documents.

As banks get a handle on those rules, they may move more quickly against late-paying mortgage-holders, Blomquist said.

All told, banks filed foreclosure-related notices on 180,817 properties last month, down 3 percent from October and down 19 percent from a year earlier.

Foreclosure?activity, which RealtyTrac measures as the number of homes receiving a notice of default, scheduled auction or bank repossession, increased on an annual basis in 23 states and Washington D.C.

At the state level, Florida had the highest?foreclosure?rate of any other state, with one in every 304 households in some stage offoreclosure, or twice the national average.

Rounding out the top 10 states by?foreclosure?rate were Nevada, Illinois, California, South Carolina, Ohio, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and Indiana.

Can I File Bankruptcy If I Am in Retirement? | AllmandLaw

December 11th, 2012 by Reed Allmand

Over the past few years more consumers over the age of 65 continue to struggle with outstanding debt.? Studies have shown that more seniors are turning to bankruptcy to help deal with their debt troubles. ?In 2007, close to 7 percent of debtors who filed for bankruptcy were senior citizens over the age of 65.? While bankruptcy is an option there are issues seniors should consider before moving forward with the filing.

Seniors who collect Social Security money may have their benefits protected from creditors.? While there are federal laws to protect such monies from garnishment, if they are deposited into your bank account the creditor may look to garnish from it.? Seniors may need to contact their creditor and let them know their bank account obtains Social Security funds in the event a judgment is issued.

Retirement funds for the most part are protected from creditors in bankruptcy, with a few exceptions.? If your pension is a considerable amount you may qualify for Chapter 13 bankruptcy instead of Chapter 7.? This will create an affordable repayment plan.? IRA?s may be protected under bankruptcy.? Some seniors may have concerns about home equity. In most cases it can be protected in bankruptcy with exemptions depending on which chapter is filed.

Seniors who reside at a nursing home may wonder about being rejected if they file bankruptcy. For the most part, this shouldn?t be an issue even though they review financial details of the senior in question.? A private assisted living facility on the other hand, may look for additional financial guarantee from a family member to ensure dues and fees can be paid when the filing is completed.

To help determine whether or not bankruptcy is an option, discuss your situation with an experienced bankruptcy attorney.

Yahoo! Mail (for iPhone)

Yahoo! has certainly struggled to remain relevant in a fast-paced world of consumer technology, and you could argue that its new standalone email app, Yahoo! Mail for iPhone (free), arrived a little too late. But it's easy to forgive Yahoo! for not being super speedy to market because it delivers a much richer email experience than the one iPhone owners are accustomed to in the bundled Mail app.

The Yahoo! Mail app is similar to Gmail's standalone iPhone app (free, 5 stars) in many ways, while still retaining plenty of the core Yahoo! identity, although Gmail goes above and beyond. Like Gmail's app, Yahoo! Mail for iPhone centralizes your whole email account so that you can access everything in it with greater efficiency. By comparison, the included Mail app puts the inbox at the fore and makes getting into other folders and settings much more difficult.

Many people, I'm sure, will continue to the use Mail as their primary email application because it can show you many inboxes from multiple services at once, but you'll want Yahoo!'s app if you use Yahoo! Mail fairly regularly, particularly if you want detailed push notifications, which will flash the subject line of new emails on your screen, and for emails formatted in HTML.

Mail vs. Yahoo! Mail
The Yahoo! Mail app has an interface design that mirrors both Gmail for iPhone and Facebook for iPhone (and now many other apps, too), in that a collapsible menu pane swings into view from the left. Toggle the menu open, and it takes up not more than half the screen so that it's roomy and easy to read. Here, you'll find your folders, such as Inbox, Spam, and Sent, as well as all the custom folders you've made. Trash, Drafts, Contacts, and Outbox live here, too. Missing from Yahoo!'s app but present in Gmail's is an "all mail" option, which you'd want if you need to search for an item across your entire account. It's no surprise that Google, the first name in search, gets the significance of having an "all mail" area from which to search.

Toward the bottom of the menu panel are apps, like Yahoo!'s general app, as well as apps for Finance and Messenger. Press these app icons, and the affiliated program will launch if you have it installed, or you'll be whisked to the iTunes store and prompted to download it.

At the very end of the menu are Tools, namely Settings (which are light), and then two buttons for "Share This App" and "Rate This App." Yahoo! could have done better to drop those last two promotional buttons and instead include more in the Settings, like out-of-office or vacation message controls, as Gmail has done. The Settings in Yahoo! Mail cover the bare minimum: confirm delete (on or off), confirm mark as spam (on or off), signature, and areas to report a problem or read more about Mail (which only shows the version number of the app).

When you first install the app and login, you can opt to receive push notifications, which Yahoo! has designed well but implemented less successfully. Standard push notification displays, like being able to see the subject line and sender of a new email from the locked screen, work right, but the badge number count of unread mails is buggy. It continues to tell me I have one unread piece of mail, even though all my messages are clearly read. The Mail app knows all the email has been opened, so something's off in Yahoo!'s app.

Emails display cleanly, even those built in HTML (see the slideshow). I'm not sure if some of my image-rich messages loaded in full because I've marked the sender as safe, but in the stock Mail app, the same messages appear as having broken images.

There are two more areas where Gmail's iPhone app trumps Yahoo!'s: threaded messages and support for multiple accounts. Gmail always color-codes email threads by sender, so you can tell at a glance when a new person replies. Google also lets you have multiple Gmail accounts right in the one mobile app. Yahoo! just doesn't offer these features, although it has only just been released. Over time, it may learn from its competition.

How Should You Access Yahoo! Mail on iPhone?
Both the Yahoo! Mail app for iPhone and the native Mail app connected to a Yahoo! account do a fine job of getting your messages to you when you're not in front of a full-sized computer. Which one you choose is largely a matter of how you use email. The Yahoo! app works well for those who to go every nook and cranny, from custom folders to the outbox, frequently. It's also much more engaging for graphic-rich emails. But to see all your mail from all your accounts at once, the Mail app is still the place to be.

Human Rights Day: Building support for older people's rights | Latest ...

10 December 2012

By Sarah Marzouk

This Human Rights Day, we are at a critical turning point regarding older people?s rights. Politics has not kept up with the realities of demographic ageing and it is time to rethink legislation, policies and the societal attitudes to ageing.

This was the message from a conference on older people?s rights, which was jointly hosted by HelpAge International, HelpAge Deutschland and Age Platform Europe, in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Germany last week.

The aim of the event was to build political support for legally binding international human rights standards.

Support for older people's rights from Navi Pillay

Addressing the event, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, backed calls for an international convention to protect the rights of older people around the world.

She said: "The standards related to the human rights of older persons needed to be developed within a comprehensive framework that recognised what she called the indivisible, interdependent and interrelated nature of rights.

"A dedicated protection regime at the international level would provide coherence to what she described as an otherwise fragmented, uneven and incomplete landscape of legal norms."

Ageing must be seen as an opportunity

Also speaking at the conference, Henning Scherf, the Head of the Expert Commission of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency to reduce age-discrimination, called for a shift in gear that would allow people to see ageing as an opportunity and not just a time of being poor.

Mr Sherf said the current legislation was not appropriate and that wage agreements and neighbourhoods had not been adapted for ageing populations.

The conference established three clear outcomes:

  • a deeper understanding of the gaps in human rights protection in Europe and the nature of the rights violations and discrimination that people experience in old age,
  • an increased number of European civil society groups and other stakeholders committed to strengthening the protection of older people's rights under international human rights law,
  • specific short and long term actions to increase European political support for new legal human rights instruments dedicated to older people's rights.

In support of these outcomes, Vladimir Spidla, former European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities and former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, who also attended the event said: ?I am fully in favour of an extension to the anti-age discrimination directive in Europe which does not go beyond the labour market? There are other types of age discrimination, for example in access to loans in the financial sector.?

Plan to strengthen older people's rights

A number of key areas were identified which aim to build more political support in Europe for strengthening the protection of older people?s rights:

  • recognising where there may be support within European governments and building relationships with those in relevant ministries in European capitals,
  • increased civil society pressure on European governments; targeting European governments individually and collectively through regional European processes,
  • long term work to tackle pervasive negative social attitudes and make ageism and discrimination in old age unacceptable.

Summing up the mood of the conference, Craig Mokhiber, Chief of the Development and Economic and Social Issues Branch from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said of older people: ?There is a growing class in society reaching out for their rights and dignity. No society can develop and prosper when a whole sector is locked out of fully participating in society.?
